Take the role of a rookie pilot to defend the skies from enemy attack. Similar in spirit to Microsoft's Crimson Skies games, Wings of War places players in the cockpits of World War I-style aircraft and pits them in arcade-style dogfights above a re-imagined, early 20th century European countryside. The game features more than 70 missions in which virtual pilots protect allies, attack enemy assets, and earn the a reputation of a true Ace. The game is designed with a forgiving control scheme, including features like "one-button evasive maneuvers," to help keep the action fast and fun. Both cooperative and competitive multiplayer gaming is supported online.

Wings of War isn't a standard flight simulator, the game is designed more as an arcade type game than a straight simulator. The player will take to the air in various different WWI early types, yet they all fly virtually the same. Even playing with the games settings, its hard to get much variation from the various models, so as a simulator, the game fails right away.
There are also several other matters that detract from this game. Unlike WW I era pilots, you have a radar screen, which I'm sure many a pilot dearly wished he had in the big one. Also, you don't have to rely on a simple Machine gun or two, no, here you have missiles, believe it or not! I have read that several French types had rockets on the wing struts, but these were for ground attack, and were wildly inaccurate. Missiles simply don't belong in this era. You also have shields, the less said about that, the better.
Since the game is set up to be arcade style, you get that favorite item of arcade games, the power up. Where do you get them? Why, by flying through hangers, and blowing up things on the ground, of course! Also, the computer opponent isn't exactly the sharpest pencil in the box, enemy planes often are flying about, just waiting to be shot down, and this often has little or nothing to do with the mission at hand.
Even with all these flaws, the game isn't all bad. The campaign is set up in a series of missions, that include tasks you must complete, and bonus challenges. The missions are what one would expect from WW I, such as air superiority, intercept, escort, strafing, bombing targets, and even air recon. In the recon mission, you become the gunner in a two seater, and your job is to get the pictures while not getting shot down, which provides some fun all its own.
The game does look good, and the controls of the plane are easy enough to use. The fight scenes and explosions are done well enough, but there really isn't anything outstanding here either. The sound is also decent, the voice overs are not horrible, as they often are in some games, so the game is good on that score.
Overall, for a bargain game, Wings of War isn't all bad. The designers went for a concept that was more a conventional shooting game, as opposed to a detailed simulator. In hind sight, that was probably a mistake, a good, accurate flight sim of the First World war could have been an exciting game, and maybe a good seller. As for this game, if you want a little flying fun, pick it up. If you want a real sim, I'm afraid you will have to look elsewhere.
Full motion video of news footage of the battles helps set the mood for the game, as does a wonderful and evocative music score by Matt Milne. Additionally, in the campaign game, newspaper stories help fill the player in on the progress of the war.
Im also a bit unsure myself,i hate ROF and its micro transactions and $29.99 for a cfs3 mod seems a lot but it does look like you get ure money worth,the $45 woff 2 expansion is massively overpriced though,how can they charge $29.99 for a main game and $45 for an expansion is beyond me but i did play OFF3 and enjoyed it.
@ NathanIt is all the same when it become to the investment, the RoF basic game is free and waiting for a regular RoF sale you can get a plane like the Dr1 for $2,39 Right now there is a RoF sale going on BTW.
Both companies have a different approach to game development, and as a result, you get very different games. Not to mention a different experience working for each. Having scored both ROF and WOFF, I can say that the more in-depth game, got the more in-depth score. WOFF is a wargame as well as a combat flight sim, it offers a lot more to the player: it offers the first world war from an aerial perspective. ROF is a great flight sim, and good for online play, but falls short as a wargame. I can do more for ROF (with its short 3-track soundtrack featured in PW:CG), but that depends on the developers and community. Scoring WOFF was an enjoyable and engaging experience, I would love to have again.
Both games are really good and im glad that there are even such games around in 2015. But for me as single-player pilot WOFF is the way better choice. For single-player it offers so much more than RoF

Despite the "Lite" tag, a fair amount of realism has been built in; 1960s-style bombsights are simulated for the pre 1970's aircraft rather than modern computer-aided aiming reticules. Dive bombing and level bombing techniques have to be worked out by the game player if they are to have success at completing missions.
US Air to Air missiles in the game consist of versions of the AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-7 Sparrow, and AIM-4 Falcon which are simulated to be as unreliable as the real missiles were. Regardless of having a "good lock on the target" there is a good chance the missile will miss. Missiles from 1978 onwards such as the AIM-9L version of the Sidewinder are much improved and more likely to score a hit.
The map of Germany has been scaled down slightly so that there is less time spent flying to a target, and also because air-to-air refuelling is not included in the game. The lack of water on the map has meant that aircraft carrier operations have not been included this time.
Flying over Soviet held East Germany the player's aircraft will be met with a high level of radar guided Surface to Air Missiles (SAMS), and a variety of lethal Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA). The main SAMs are the soviet SA-2 and SA-6, of which early and later versions are included in the game increasing lethality accordingly.
This series of games is designed by Tsuyoshi Kawahito (known as 'TK'), who was also involved in some of the 1990s best selling PC flight simulators, including European Air War (1998) by MicroProse and Longbow 2 (1997) by Jane's Combat Simulations.
